NIN: NIMC SET TO ENHANCE ITS BIOMETRIC SYSTEM WITH IDEMIA’S SMART IDENTITY.

IDEMIA Smart Identity and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) have agreed to renew their long-standing collaboration and upgrade NIMC’s biometric system to become the most advanced biometric system in the world, comparable only with Aadhaar in India.

The original system was created to accommodate 100 million records but has now reached approximately 90 million records, necessitating this expansion to cover the entire Nigerian population.

In this context, NIMC is on track to meet the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals target for 2030, which aims to provide legal identity for everyone by 2030.

Moreover, the system upgrade will ensure NIMC’s compliance with OSIA, a set of open standard interfaces (APIs) facilitating seamless connectivity across all components of the identity management ecosystem.

“We are pleased to continue our longstanding partnership with NIMC for the betterment of Nigeria’s growing population. The new robust system is designed to be future-proof, ensuring that all Nigerians have access to a secure, trusted identity, enabling them to exercise their rights and responsibilities as citizens. Furthermore, this agreement, in Africa’s most populous country, underscores IDEMIA’s ability to deploy its technologies at scale,” explains Olivier Charlanes, Senior Vice President of Middle East and Africa at IDEMIA Smart Identity.

“Advancing our system with IDEMIA Smart Identity was the logical next step for us. We aimed to deliver a top-notch solution to our fellow Nigerians, and the sheer capability of the biometric matching we will receive ensures that the solution is ready for our expanding population,” says Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, CEO of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and chairman of the OSIA Advisory Committee.

Note: United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 16.9: “By 2030, provide legal identity for all, including birth registration.”
