NCC EMPHASIZES ENSURING CONSUMER HAPPINESS IS OUR TOP PRIORITY – MAIDA

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is working towards improved services to telecom consumers, says Dr. Aminu Maida, the executive vice chairman.

The head of the NCC has pledged an enhancement of telecommunication services for consumers in the country, emphasizing a commitment to bringing joy to their faces. This assurance was given during an inaugural breakfast meeting with editors in Abuja on Monday.

Maida acknowledged that the current state of telecommunication services in the country falls short of expectations, and he outlined a focus on transparency regarding tariffs and billings to ensure accurate billing for consumers. He highlighted the impact of the challenging mobile access situation, leading consumers to adopt digital practices that result in higher costs.

Expressing a desire to collaborate closely with telecom companies, Maida outlined his vision to enhance communication services nationwide, promote industry resilience, drive maturity, and strengthen business operations.

Addressing security concerns, he acknowledged the use of telephone lines by bandits to extort ransom from families of abducted victims. Efforts are underway to secure the industry and curb the use of illegal SIM cards. Maida announced plans to deactivate all SIM cards not linked to the National Identity Number (NIN) by the end of February, aiming to mitigate security risks associated with unregistered cards.

Regarding the sale of illegal SIM cards, Maida assured that measures were being taken to appropriately sanction those involved. He emphasized his ultimate goal of ensuring secure telecom services with absolute data privacy.

Responding to concerns about spectrum allocation, Maida clarified that the NCC focuses solely on telecom spectrum and follows recommendations from the National Spectrum Council, which includes representatives from key stakeholders.

Maida urged the media to report objectively and encouraged fair coverage of the NCC, while also requesting that the commission be notified if any deviations from its objectives were observed.
