WORLD BANK GROUP AFRICA FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

About the WBG Africa Fellowship Program:

The program is designed for young talented African nationals who are in the process of completing or have recently finished their Ph.D. in an area relevant to the World Bank’s work. Since its inception, the fellowship program has achieved significant success, creating a robust pipeline of young African talent interested in pursuing careers in development within international institutions, African governments, think tanks, and academia.

Selected fellows have the opportunity for a six-month assignment at WBG offices, either in Washington D.C. or in-country offices. This hands-on experience encompasses various aspects of WBG operations, including knowledge generation and dissemination, the design of global and country policies, and the establishment of institutions to foster inclusive growth in developing countries. Fellows, while engaging in research and innovation across multiple sectors, also contribute to the World Bank’s overarching goals of poverty elimination and the promotion of shared prosperity through work on research, economic policy, technical assistance, and lending operations.

Full Eligibility Criteria:

  • Recent Ph.D. graduate (within three years of completion) or currently enrolled in the last year of the Ph.D. program.
  • Excellent command of English, both written and verbal.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills.
  • Under the age of 32 by the close of the application period.

Selection Process:

Phase I: A shortlist of candidates will be created for potential hiring by different units of the WBG, based on applicants’ specializations. Applicants will receive notifications about the status of their applications, including whether they have been shortlisted.

Phase II: The final list of fellows will be chosen in consultation with various units of the WBG. Once the selection process concludes, all shortlisted candidates will be informed of their selection status. Selected candidates will receive notifications and, upon acceptance, will be hired as short-term consultants for a six-month period starting in January 2024.

Fellows are entitled to receive consultant fees and round-trip economy class air travel to Washington, D.C., or a WBG country office from their university or institution.
