WHY BRITISH COUNCIL INCREASED IELTS FEES FOR SECOND TIME IN 2024
British council Nigeria (BCN) recently announced a second price increase for the international English language testing system (IELTS) in 2024. this comes amid concerns about the exchange rates of the Nigerian naira against other currencies. the council attributed the price hike to “prevailing market dynamics,” stating that the change is due to evolving market conditions and increased costs in exam delivery. the new prices for IELTS tests took effect on March 1. under the adjusted prices, applicants for IELTS computer academic and general training modules will now pay n266,000, while those opting for paper academic and general training modules must pay n256,500. Uk visas and immigration (Ukvi) applicants will pay n285,500, and IELT life skills now costs n249,000. this increase follows a 29% increment in January, when the price of the test was raised from n107,500 to n139,000 for computer academic and general training modules, n134,000 for paper academic and general training modules, and n149,000 for Ukvi applicants. IELTS scores are widely recognized English language assessments for migrants seeking to study abroad and skilled workers applying for jobs overseas. the Nigerian government has faced criticism for the recent depreciation of the naira against foreign currencies.
