UNEP ENVIRONMENT YOUNG CHAMPIONS OF THE EARTH PROGRAM 2024 (SEED FUNDING & FUNDED TRIP TO HIGH-LEVEL UN MEETING)

Applications are now open for the 2024 UN Environment Young Champions of the Earth.

Young Champions of the Earth is the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) flagship youth engagement initiative, recognizing ambitious young individuals globally with outstanding ideas to protect and restore the environment. The award aims to honor young changemakers with innovative ideas and solutions addressing the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.

In 2024, Young Champions of the Earth will be selected, with one winner from each global region: Africa, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, North America, West Asia, and two from Asia and the Pacific. Each winner will receive:

  • Mentorship, capacity-building workshops, and access to a UN community of experts.
  • Introduction to dignitaries at the Young Champions of the Earth award ceremony.
  • Publicity and recognition through interviews and global media.
  • US$20,000 in seed funding.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • At least 6 months of experience working on an impactful environmental idea.
  • Aged between 18 and 30 on 31 December 2024.

Benefits:

If selected, Young Champions of the Earth will be required to travel internationally to attend the Champions of the Earth award ceremony, an entrepreneurship boot camp, and educational tours. Travel expenses will be covered by UNEP, and all winners must have a valid passport.

Selection Criteria:

In the first stage of the selection process, applications will be judged by United Nations experts based on the following criteria:

  1. The 3 Ps – Positive impact on the environment (planet), society (people), and financial viability (prosperity) of the big idea.
  2. The 3 Cs – Evidence of being a curious, courageous, and colorful individual.
  3. Demonstrated commitment – Implementation of the big idea for at least six months with outlined achievements.
  4. Endorsement – The strength of the referee’s recommendation.
