Tomorrow’s Leaders Undergraduate Program accepts applications from citizens of Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia, Syria, Yemen, Iraq, and the West Bank and Gaza (including Palestinians residing outside of the West Bank and Gaza).

About the Program

Overview Tomorrow’s Leaders Undergraduate (TLU) Scholarship Program is a joint effort between the US Department of State, Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs (NEA/AC) and AUC. The program provides educational opportunities to outstanding youth with leadership potential from different countries in the Arab World. TLU seeks to select the best high school students from groups and communities in different countries from the Middle East and North Africa region that have traditionally lacked systematic access to an American higher education system. TLU offers such students the opportunity to pursue their academic undergraduate education at AUC. Through high-quality academic support, leadership development activities, and civic engagement opportunities, the program fosters professionalism, ethical conduct, and tolerance to enable the students to become globally competitive leaders and change agents in their respective societies. The TLU scholarship program provides exceptional benefits for students including full coverage of all applicable charges for enrollment, tuition and fees, housing, a monthly stipend, and pre-academic training, if needed, including English language training. TLU Students also receive leadership training including team-building, goal setting; time management; work ethics, public relations, networking skills and other related skill, and benefit from academic advising, mentoring, and career services. Moreover, all students are required to engage in community service activities, voluntary work and public/private internships. All students are also required to attend one semester abroad in a US university. Each cohort of students is supported by a Student Life Coordinator to help students integrate into AUC and Egypt, and to provide individual support towards their personal and professional development. As of Fall 2021, ten cohorts have been admitted to the TLU program, with a total of 141 students (78 females and 63 males) from 16 different countries in the Middle East region. Countries include Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, West Bank and Palestine, Syria, Iraq, Bahrain, UAE, Kuwait, KSA, and Yemen. 91 students have already graduated from the program and 39 students are currently enrolled at AUC. ”

Mission

The Tomorrow’s Leaders Undergraduate Scholarship Program seeks to support academically qualified, but economically disadvantaged students by providing a four to five-year academic matriculation, civic education and community service opportunities to secondary school graduates in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Tomorrow’s Leaders will create a strong foundation for a cadre of civic-minded, intellectually able, and professionally skilled university students, well-prepared to become future community and business leaders.

Our vision is to be recognized regionally and internationally for exemplary scholarship management and excellent leadership development practices and to play an effective role in addressing the challenges facing the Arab region through our well-trained and professionally and intellectually developed graduates and change agents.

Values

In our implementation of program activities and internal and external interactions, we are committed to observing the following values:

• Individual and social responsibility: We believe that individuals are accountable for their actions and choices in life, and, as members of the community, our individual actions have an impact on others. We believe that individuals should engage positively with others in working on benefiting the immediate community and society at large.
• Integrity: We believe that our actions and expectations should be consistent with our values and beliefs. We practice what we preach.
• Student-Centeredness: We believe that meeting students where they are is the only way to guide them to where they need to be. We strive to address students’ needs through our tailored programs.
• Human rights: We believe that all individuals are born free and equal in dignity and rights and that they are endowed with reason and conscience. They should be provided with equal opportunities and shall not be subject to discrimination on any basis including race, color, sex, language, religion, political or other opinions, national or social origin, property, birth or another status.
• Life-long learning: We believe that the pursuit of knowledge, understanding, and personal and professional development should continue throughout one’s lifetime.

Program Pillars Tomorrow’s Leaders Undergraduate program has three main pillars. Through their time at AUC, TLU scholars develop their leadership potential and skills, actively engage in the civic community, and advance as young professionals who are ready to change the world.

1. Leadership Development: TLU scholars attend various training about leadership. Furthermore, they sharpen their skills through their hands-on participation in different clubs and organizations both within and outside the walls of AUC.
2. Civic Awareness and Involvement: “Without community service, we would not have a strong quality of life. It is important for the person who serves as well as the recipient. It’s the way in which we ourselves grow and develop” (Dorothy Height, Social Activist)*. TLU scholars passionately take on healthy roles in the lives of their communities.
3. Professional Advancement: Through volunteer and internship opportunities, as well as professional guidance and coaching, TLU scholars embark on the journey of professional development from their freshman year.
4. Gender Sensitization: Students participate in lectures, seminars, courses, and workshops related to gender awareness and equity issues.

• A six-week public service/volunteer experience internship in the summer between freshman and sophomore year.
• A locally or regionally-based two-month public sector internship or volunteer experience in the summer between sophomore and junior year.
• A semester or year in the United States matriculating at a partnering institution and participating in a part-time, semester-long volunteer/community service component in their junior year.
• Support for each scholarship recipients’ own six-month, self-designed civic service project.
• An academic course on leadership and civic engagement in the fall of their senior year.
• A practicum at the home institution in the fall of the senior year, in which the scholarship recipient plans, with the guidance of a mentor and in the consultation with other “Tomorrow’s Leaders” colleagues, his/her own six-month civic service project(s).
• Over the course of the scholarship experience, participation in regular (e.g. quarterly) Tomorrow’s Leaders events, to include: roundtable discussions led by public and private sector leaders; professional presentations and discussions with current Tomorrow’s Leaders Undergraduate scholarship alumni and other networking events with a Council of Community Leaders.
• Participation in a two-direction mentorship program that includes meeting, on a regular (e.g. quarterly) basis, with a public or private sector community leader serving as the recipient’s mentor. Current scholarship recipients should also serve as mentors to incoming recipients.
• Participation in regular (e.g. quarterly), community-wide volunteer/service events planned by the University throughout the TLU’s academic tenure.
