Taraba State Advisory Committee reassures traditional rulers on LG autonomy
The Taraba State Advisory Committee on Local Government Autonomy has moved to calm the fears of traditional rulers in the state, assuring them that the financial autonomy granted to the 16 local government areas will not erode their influence.Rt. Hon. Peter Diah, Chairman of the Committee and state House of Assembly Committee Chairman on Local Government, Tradition, and Chieftaincy Affairs, gave this assurance during a consultative meeting with traditional rulers in Central Taraba, held in Gembu, Sardauna Local Government Area.
According to Diah, the autonomy is a win-win situation for both the government and traditional institutions, enabling monarchs to take an active part in decision-making and local development. “Local government autonomy will strengthen and empower our traditional institutions, allowing you to play a more pivotal role in the development and well-being of your people,” he stated.
Diah emphasized the importance of traditional rulers’ guidance and involvement in local governance, envisioning a future where local government administrations collaborate closely with monarchs to address unique community challenges.
The committee has developed a template to ensure traditional institutions are actively involved in grassroots development. The Chief of Mambilla, Dr. Shehu Baju II, speaking on behalf of the monarchs, expressed their willingness to work with the framework, thanking Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, for the honor bestowed upon them.
This development follows Governor Kefas’ inauguration of the advisory committee to implement local government autonomy in Taraba State, as mandated by the Supreme Court’s judgment.
