STORYMI FELLOWSHIP: MAKE YOUR NIGERIAN DOC FILM DREAM A REALITY (2024)
Calling all aspiring Nigerian documentary filmmakers!
The StoryMi Academy Documentary Film Fellowship offers a unique opportunity to turn your documentary dreams into reality. This prestigious program provides comprehensive training, mentorship, and funding to nurture the next generation of Nigerian documentary storytellers.
Eligibility:
- Nigerian Citizen & Resident: Be a Nigerian citizen residing in Nigeria between the ages of 20 and 35.
- Filmmaking Experience: Possess prior filmmaking experience or experience in a related field. You should have at least one completed film project (web or non-web) where you were a credited member of the production team.
- Compelling Project: Have a strong script or treatment ready for development and production, along with a detailed production bible or plan outlining the execution of your documentary project.
The Fellowship Journey:
Selection Process: A jury will meticulously review application materials and mini-documentary submissions to select ten fellows.
International Exposure: As part of the program, fellows will have the privilege of attending the renowned Sunny Side of the Doc international documentary film festival in France (end of June 2024). This experience will provide invaluable insights from industry leaders.
Immersive Learning: The fellowship includes intensive in-person and virtual workshops where fellows will delve into the core principles of documentary filmmaking under the guidance of renowned instructors. These instructors include Louise Monlaü (Al Jazeera, New York Times, OpDocs) and Ike Nnaebue (No U-Turn, Arte production). StoryMi Academy will cover all travel and accommodation costs associated with these workshops.
Mentorship & Project Development: Following the workshops, fellows will engage in regular individual coaching sessions with assigned mentors who will offer ongoing support throughout the project development process.
Production Grants: Four outstanding fellows will be selected to receive substantial grants of 1.5 million naira each to bring their documentary films to life.
Film Screening: In December 2024 (date subject to change), a screening night will be held to celebrate the fellows’ completed documentary films.
How to Apply:
- Complete the Online Application: Submit a detailed online application form that provides information about your background, experience, motivation, creative approach, and project proposal.
- Submit a Short Documentary: Share your storytelling abilities and technical skills by submitting a short documentary film (maximum 5 minutes).
Deadline: Applications close at midnight on May 3rd, 2024. Selected applicants will be notified on May 17th, 2024.
