SEVEN CRUCIAL ASPECTS REGARDING THE FRESH NIMC MULTIPURPOSE NATIONAL ID CARD IN NIGERIA:
The federal government of Nigeria, via the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), has unveiled plans for a new national identity solution featuring payment functionality. This identity card serves various social and financial purposes.
Confirming this development roughly a week ago, Mr. Kayode Adegoke, head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, stated that the collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System (NIBSS) has led to this new identity card scheme.
Here are key details about the proposed multipurpose national identity card:
- The new National ID Card is a unified, convenient, and versatile General Multipurpose Card (GMPC), eliminating the need for multiple cards—specifically not three.
- The single GMPC offers multiple functionalities including Payments/Financial services, Government interventions/services, travel, etc.
- The National Identity Management Commission is collaborating with the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System to implement the payment and financial functionalities.
- The card will operate through the AFRIGO card scheme, a local scheme powered by NIBSS.
- Applicants must request the card using their NIN via the self-service online portal, NIMC offices, or their respective banks.
- The card issuance will be carried out by applicants’ respective banks following existing protocols for issuing Debit/Credit cards.
- Cardholders can collect their cards from designated centers or have them delivered.
