The University of Lagos (UNILAG), DaySpring School, and Marvelvine Montessori School, all based in Lagos, have emerged as winners in the tertiary, secondary, and primary school categories respectively at the 2024 Ecobank National Schools’ Team Chess Competition. The event, held at the Pan African Centre in Lagos, showcased a remarkable assembly of talent.

Described as the largest gathering of chess players in Africa, the competition attracted over 1,200 players from more than 250 schools across 18 states in Nigeria, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Closing Ceremony Highlights
Prince Adeyinka Adewole, Vice President of the Nigeria Chess Federation (NCF), expressed his excitement at the closing ceremony. He noted the rapid growth of the Championship, which was introduced last year in conjunction with the International Chess Federation’s (ICF) World Schools Team Chess Championship. Adewole highlighted that the 2024 edition saw participation from 1,200 participants, underscoring the importance of NCF’s partnership with Ecobank as a model for public-private partnerships in advancing sports in Nigeria.
Participation and Prizes
The three-day tournament, held from Friday, May 24th to Sunday, May 26th at the Ecobank Pan African Centre (EPAC) in Victoria Island, Lagos, saw 118 primary schools, 86 secondary schools, and 42 tertiary institutions compete for prizes totaling over N15 million.

Senator John Owan Enoh, the Minister of Sports, represented by Ms. Ikana Mbora, Director of the Federal Ministry of Sports Liaison Office in Lagos, commended the NCF and the students for their resilience and determination. Established in 1975, the Nigeria Chess Federation (NCF) is responsible for promoting, regulating, and developing chess in Nigeria. Affiliated with the International Chess Federation (FIDE), the NCF organizes national and international tournaments, trains and selects players for international competitions, and promotes chess at all levels. The NCF has produced strong players who have achieved notable successes in African Chess Championships and Chess Olympiads.
