University of Melbourne Research Training Program Scholarship: Fund Your Graduate Research

The University of Melbourne, in collaboration with the Australian Commonwealth Government, offers the prestigious Research Training Program Scholarship to high-achieving domestic and international research students. This scholarship aims to support exceptional students pursuing coursework research degrees at the university.

Scholarship Benefits:

  • Research Training Program Scholarship (Fee Offset): This scholarship covers the full tuition fees for up to two years for a Master’s by Research degree or up to four years for a Doctoral degree.
  • Research Training Program Scholarship (Stipend and Fee Offset): In addition to the full tuition fee coverage for the same durations mentioned above, this scholarship also provides a living allowance of $37,000 per year (pro-rated for part-time study) for up to two years for a Master’s by Research or up to 3.5 years for a Doctoral degree. This allowance may be adjusted annually and includes limited paid sick leave, maternity leave, and parental leave. International students who require a visa to study in Australia will also receive Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Single Membership. Relocation grants of $2,000 (for students moving from other Australian states or territories) or $3,000 (for students moving from outside Australia) are also available.

  • You must have applied for and meet the entry requirements for a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne, or be currently enrolled in such a program.

Selection Process:

  • All domestic students admitted to a Master’s by Research or Doctoral degree (PhD) program at the University of Melbourne will automatically receive the Research Training Program Scholarship (Fee Offset).
  • The Research Training Program Scholarship (Stipend and Fee Offset) is awarded competitively to both domestic and international students based on academic merit. Selection is based on your academic achievements in your last completed degree and your research potential in your chosen field of study. Factors such as completing a degree at the same level as the research course for which you are applying, relevant professional experience, published research papers, specialist medical qualifications, or original musical compositions may also be considered.

  • Living allowance of $37,000 per year pro rata (2024 full-time study rate) for up to two years for students undertaking a Masters by Research degree or up to 3.5 years for students undertaking a doctoral degree. The living allowance may be indexed annually and includes limited paid sick, maternity and parenting leave.
  • Relocation grant of $2,000 for students moving from States or Territories other than Victoria or $3,000 for students moving from outside Australia.
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Single Membership for international students who require a student visa to study in Australia
