Biology at GSU is located in downtown Atlanta, building on the city’s remarkable research legacy. GSU is one of four R1 institutions in the state of Georgia – students and faculty routinely collaborate with Emory University, Georgia Tech, and the University of Georgia. The department houses state of the art facilities allowing GSU to be a world leader in pandemic response, Virology, Microbiology, and Cell Physiology and Metabolism. We aim to train world leading researchers and advocates in Biology.
Student requirements
- Essential: Undergraduate degree in Biology, Biochemistry (or equivalent) Preferred M.Sc. in Biology related field.
- GPA 3.5 ≥ or equivalent (2:1 UK), please provide transcripts.
- English proficiency test (IELTS average 6.5 (minimum 7 written) or equivalent such as TOELF ~95) if main degree not taught in English.
- 3 letters of recommendation.
- Letter of purpose or personal statement.

Cost of attendance and funding opportunities are integral to your decision to attend graduate school. Georgia State is proud to offer a variety of funding opportunities, such as assistantships and fellowships.
The department provides funding opportunities in the form of Graduate Research Assistantships (GRAs). All accepted doctoral students are guaranteed a GRA appointment, which includes a full tuition waiver and a stipend ($28000 minimum).
Graduates are expected to finish the program within 5 years, having completed a minimum of 53 Research Credits. Graduates are also required to take a small selection of core courses in Advanced Genetics and Advanced Cellular Physiology.
