ON THE LAUNCH OF POLICE VETERANS’ FOUNDATION

History was recently created with the formal launch of the Nigerian Police Veterans’ Foundation at the Police Service Commission Corporate Headquarters in Jabi, Abuja. The event was marked by grandeur and pomp, resembling a majestic eagle soaring amidst a sky adorned with the blue, yellow, and green colors of the Nigeria Police Force. Each moment was steeped in tradition, with every step echoing a verse in the song of the nation’s heritage. The air resonated with the beats of police drums, reflecting the heartbeats of a people who have sacrificed much in the service of their fatherland. Speeches from well-meaning Nigerians carried the wisdom of ages past, creating a day where time swayed to alternating rhythms of jubilation and somber reflection, painting the canvas of memory with strokes of reverence and honor.

The brainchild of the Honourable Chairman, Police Service Commission, Dr. Solomon Ehigiator Arase, the Police Veterans’ Foundation was conceived to bring retired police officers together to generate ideas for the betterment of the police. Starting with the creation of the Retired Police Officers’ Consultative Forum, which offers retired officers a platform to discuss contemporary issues and challenges facing the police, the idea evolved into the establishment of the Police Veterans’ Foundation. The foundation aims to address concerns and pressures faced by retired officers, seeking resources to provide support to their children in terms of employment opportunities, skills acquisition training, and other necessities. It also aims to engage competent retired officers as valuable resources for training and retraining programs within both the NPF and PSC.

The launch of the Police Veterans’ Foundation is timely, given the challenges faced by retired police officers and the need to harness their expertise for the benefit of the force. It heralds a new chapter in the history of the Nigeria Police Force, marked by unity, compassion, and a shared commitment to honoring the service and sacrifice of those who dedicated their lives to protecting the nation.

The Foundation, if sustained, will alleviate the pains and concerns of retired officers. However, the Board of Trustees and other members cannot do it alone; they need the support of relevant stakeholders to keep it afloat. The President and the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, have pledged their support for this noble project. Governor Eno, being the proud son of a retired police officer, shared his life experience growing up in the barracks, highlighting the stereotypes he faced and his mother’s struggles after the demise of his father. His story serves as a poignant metaphor for the plight of the average Nigerian police officer, emphasizing the need for greater recognition and support for those who bravely serve in law enforcement, ensuring the safety and security of their fellow citizens.
