OBASANJO CAUTIONS YOUTH ON THE PERILS OF SUICIDE
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, on Monday, issued a warning to Nigerian youth, advising them against resorting to suicide as an escape from their challenges. He urged them to confront their problems and seek solutions rather than taking their own lives.
Obasanjo delivered this message at a youth leadership symposium with the theme “Opportunities for Peace: Roles of The Youth in Conflict Prevention in Africa,” held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta. The event was part of the activities planned for the celebration of the former president’s 87th birthday.
Expressing his disapproval of youth resorting to suicide due to life difficulties, Obasanjo emphasized that such actions are ungodly and illegal, and they do not solve any problems. He encouraged the youth to face challenges head-on and seek divine intervention, stating, “Committing suicide is not the end of any problem; confront it and take it to God because he could do anything. When you have a problem, look at those who have had this problem before and how they overcame it.”
In a separate birthday message, Niger State governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, praised Obasanjo’s virtues on his 87th birthday. The governor described Obasanjo as an exceptional, patriotic, and committed leader who dedicated the best years of his life to the survival, unity, stability, and development of not only Nigeria but the entire African continent. Bago acknowledged Obasanjo as a living legend and a strong voice both within and outside Nigeria, recognizing his remarkable sacrifices for Nigeria and many African countries.
