NPA ADOPTS TTP E-TAG TECH FOR APAPA, TINCAN ISLAND PORTS

NPA Adopts TTP’s E-Tag Technology for Apapa and Tincan Island Ports

In a groundbreaking move towards enhancing efficiency and security within Nigeria’s maritime industry, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has announced a strategic collaboration with Trucks Transit Parks Ltd. (TTP) to deploy E-tag technology. This initiative aligns with the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) objectives, aimed at facilitating the ease of doing business in the country.

Background and Endorsement

The decision follows the endorsement of E-tag technology by the Managing Director of NPA during an expanded stakeholders meeting on April 23, 2024. This endorsement recognized the technology as a viable solution for the challenges faced by the ports.

Financial Commitment and Investment

TTP has committed to bearing the entire financial burden of the project, demonstrating its dedication to long-term investments in advancing Nigeria’s port digital infrastructure. This commitment underscores TTP’s unwavering support for the NPA’s goals and the broader objectives of PEBEC.

Jama Onwubuariri, Managing Director of TTP, highlighted the company’s commitment: “We are dedicated to investing hundreds of millions in this project because we firmly believe in the long-term sustainability of the port ecosystem. We are proud to partner with the NPA and the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy to deploy E-tag technology, enhancing efficiency and security and further enabling a better business environment for the nation.”

Project Implementation and Technology

The project will cover all trucks accessing both Apapa and Tincan Island ports, including industrial company trucks. Key highlights of the deployment agreement include:

  • Financing: TTP will finance the entire deployment, relieving truck owners and stakeholders of any financial burden.
  • Technology: The E-tag system will function as an electronic secure tagging system with embedded MSS and other port compliance requirements. This system will replace the tamper-susceptible paper MSS and enable real-time monitoring of truck safety status.

The adoption of RFID technology, coupled with the E-tag system, is seen as essential for overcoming challenges and enhancing security and compliance measures within Nigerian ports. The integrated solution, developed in-house by TTP’s experts, is meticulously designed to address industry-specific needs and combat fraudulent activities by truckers.

Stakeholder Collaboration and Approval

Deployment will proceed upon formal approval from the NPA. This collaborative effort between TTP and the NPA reflects a commitment to technological advancement and enhanced security within the maritime industry, facilitating ease of business for the nation and its citizens.

Conclusion

By embracing this initiative, the NPA demonstrates its dedication to fostering a more efficient and secure port ecosystem. TTP looks forward to working closely with the NPA to ensure the successful deployment and integration of E-tag technology, marking a significant step towards improving the efficiency and security of Nigeria’s ports.
