NIGERIANS ABROAD SHOULD REGISTER FOR NIN VIA THE MOBILE APP
From February 2024, Nigerians living abroad will easily apply for a Nation Identity Number (NIN) via the National Identity Management Commission’s (NIMC) app.
According to the original source, it was pointed that this development will accelerate identity services, address the slow growth of the NIN database, and ensure a more effective and inclusive system for Nigerians both inside and outside the country.
In addition, as part of the process, the NIMC Office will establish a dedicated Diaspora Focal Point Desk to guarantee prompt resolution of issues within a day.
Pushing further the original source gave us an elaboration as to why this is essential for the Nigerian citizens living abroad. “This customer-focused approach aims to satisfy the agency’s dedication to providing quality service delivery by assisting Nigerian expatriates.
The Director General of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, made emphasizes that the app is consistent with the agency’s goal of improving service delivery and establishing an easy-to-use system for Nigerians living abroad.
However, this move may contribute to populating the NIN database, which stood at 104.16 million as of December 31, 2023, but is considered low compared to the country’s population of over 200 million and as of June 1, 2024, the nation intends to provide NIN to 50 million children under the age of 16 and at least 65 million female Nigerians.
“Thus, NIMC aims to enroll 148 million Nigerians by June 2024 as part of the World Bank-supervised Digital Identity for Development (DID4D) project.”
