In his account of the Executive Board of Directors’ (EBoD’s) stewardship over the past year, Mr. Adesola Akinsanya reported that as of February 2024, NiRA registrars have registered 215,441 .ng domain names. He emphasized the increasing popularity of the .ng domain, Nigeria’s internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD), for websites and email addresses.
According to the NiRA Audited Account for the year ending December 31st, 2023, the number of .ng domain names had reached 212,890, marking an increase of 29,098 from the 183,792 recorded in December 2022.
Mr. Akinsanya praised President Bola Tinubu’s administration for the Renewed Hope agenda, which aims to leverage the digital economy to improve citizens’ lives. He also commended Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, for his efforts to promote the adoption of the .ng domain within and outside government circles. He noted the support from the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), led by Kashifu Inuwa, in advocating for public and private organizations to switch to the .ng domain.
“The need for both government and private institutions to adopt the .ng brand is crucial for advancing the country’s digital economy agenda,” Mr. Akinsanya stated. He also highlighted NiRA’s support for the Minister’s initiatives to promote transparency in governance, protect Nigerian cyberspace, and advance the Digital Nigeria agenda.
NiRA has been urging the government to accelerate the adoption of second-level domains (.gov.ng, .edu.ng, .mil.ng) under the ccTLD.ng.
Additionally, Mr. Akinsanya announced the accreditation of twenty-two new registrars last year, acknowledging the collective efforts of NiRA Accredited Registrars and their Resellers. “Our commitment to nurturing a robust partnership with our accredited registrars remains unwavering,” he said, highlighting the establishment of the Registrar’s Relationship Manager position to better address registrars’ needs and foster stronger stakeholder relationships.
Earlier, Mrs. Ibukun Odusote, chairperson of the Board of Trustees of NiRA, expressed her gratitude and appreciation to the stakeholders. “Your dedication, commitment, and contributions have been instrumental in our continued success and growth,” she said. She emphasized the importance of coming together as a community to share ideas, insights, and experiences, reaffirming their shared vision and mission.
