MULTIPLE TAXATION CONCERNS: BAKERS INDICATE POSSIBLE NATIONWIDE STRIKE.

The decision was reached due to the Federal government’s failure to implement the 2020 agreement with the association. They urged the immediate implementation of financial support palliatives promised for bakers post-COVID-19.

The call includes the suspension of all forms of taxation on the bakery industry at the federal, state, and local government levels. Alhaji Mansur Umar, the National President of AMBCON, expressed this in a statement read by Chief Gabriel Adeniyi, the Kogi State chairman of the association.

The decision to withdraw services is attributed to the increase in the prices of baking materials, driven by subsidy removal and forex deregulation. Multiple taxations from various government agencies and the general business environment in Nigeria are also cited as reasons for the planned strike.

The association demands the liberalization of flour and sugar importation, reduction or removal of import duties on key baking materials, and concessionary forex exchange for stakeholders. They also seek a reduction in tariffs on imported wheat and sugar, the development of wheat and sugar cane cultivation and processing in Nigeria, and the elimination of multiple taxations.

Furthermore, the association calls for the establishment of a price control and monitoring committee, along with measures to enhance the ease of doing business in the country.
