MPHIL SOUTHERN URBANISM DAAD SCHOLARSHIP [2025] FOR SAHARAN AFRICA STUDENT
The DAAD MPhil Southern Urbanism Scholarships for 2024/2025 are now open for sub-Saharan African students.
About the Award: The African Centre for Cities, in partnership with the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD), invites scholarship applications for the 2024 academic year.
DAAD is offering five In-Region Scholarships* to students from Sub-Saharan Africa enrolling in the MPhil Southern Urbanism (Masters in Urban Studies) program at the University of Cape Town.
Eligible Fields: The In-Region Scholarship Programme supports studies in subject areas relevant to national development. At the University of Cape Town, scholarships are available for the MPhil in Urban Studies – Southern Urbanism.

Who can apply? Applicants must:
- Have completed a four-year university degree (Master candidates) with above average results (at least: Second Class/Upper Division or equivalent, if applicable).
- Clearly demonstrate motivation and strong commitment.
- Possess thorough knowledge of the language of instruction.
- Have completed their last university degree not more than 6 years ago at the time of application.
- Be nationals or permanent residents of a Sub-Saharan African country (excluding South Africa).
- Generally be: a) staff members of a public university, b) candidates considered for teaching or research staff recruitment, c) from the public sector, and/or d) Alumni of the DAFI-programme.
- Female applicants, refugees with recognized refugee status, and candidates from other less privileged regions or groups are especially encouraged to participate in the program.
Scholarships are initially granted for one year and can be extended to a maximum of the regular period of study upon receipt of an application for extension. Scholars must demonstrate satisfactory progress before an extension is granted.
Applicants must apply for the scholarship via the DAAD portal. Applicants are required to log into the DAAD portal, register themselves, and submit a DAAD application. The DAAD’s deadline is April 9, 2024.
The DAAD will conduct a formal review of the applications received via the DAAD portal according to its criteria. Only complete applications and applicants who meet the DAAD application requirements and are formally admissible according to the DAAD selection criteria will be forwarded to the host institution for the next step.
Regardless of this process, applicants must simultaneously apply for admission at the University of Cape Town using the prescribed contacts and method by the institution. The institution has set its own deadline for the admission process. Applicants should inform themselves about the respective application processes at the host institution.
Please note: In some countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, a document from the Qualifications Authority must be submitted for admission to the universities (e.g., from SAQA in South Africa). Applicants should note that the application for these documents may take time, and it is their responsibility to inquire early to receive the documents from the respective authorities in time.

Applications for the DAAD scholarship must be submitted via the DAAD portal
Applications submitted through other channels or to other authorities will not be considered.
The DAAD portal closes at 24.00 hrs. Central European Time (CET or CEST) on the last application day.
