MINISTER URGES LABOUR TO BACK TINUBU
The Minister for Labour and Employment, Nkiruka Onyejeocha, emphasized that the President Bola Tinubu administration prioritizes food security and economic prosperity. She urged Nigerians to exercise patience with the new government, stating that the administration is currently in its planting season with the expectation of a fruitful harvest.
Onyejeocha reported that the Federal Government has fulfilled approximately 90% of the 15-point memorandum of understanding signed with the organized labor on October 2, 2023. Some of the agreements include approving a wage award of N35,000 for workers, inaugurating a minimum wage committee, and suspending the collection of Value Added Tax (VAT) on Diesel for six months.
Addressing the ongoing challenges, she acknowledged the economic difficulties faced by Nigerians, emphasizing the government’s commitment to addressing them. On the issue of rising inflation, food inflation, forex crisis, economic hardship, and the high cost of living, Onyejeocha explained that the government is taking steps to mitigate these challenges. She mentioned engaging with the Minister of Agriculture to discuss strategies for food security.
While acknowledging the right of labor to express solidarity and empathy with the people, Onyejeocha called for patriotism, stressing the need for everyone, including labor, to be on the same page with the government during these challenging times. She highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to Nigerians and announced an employment empowerment initiative aimed at providing 2.5 million jobs to Nigerians within a year.
Regarding the recent protests and strikes, Onyejeocha commented on the engagement with labor leaders, noting that despite efforts, the protest proceeded. The Trade Union Congress (TUC) distanced itself from the strike, while the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) conducted nationwide protests, citing concerns about hunger and not just a demand for a minimum wage review.
The minister addressed the provision of high-capacity Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses for mass transit, stating that funds have been released for the purpose. However, she acknowledged challenges, such as the unpredictability of the duration containers stay in ports.
