LAGOS COMMUTER RAIL SYSTEM: BLUE LINE HITS 1 MILLION PASSENGER MARK!
The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced a significant milestone for the Lagos Blue Line light rail system. In just 219 days of operation, the Blue Line has successfully transported over 1 million passengers.
This impressive achievement was revealed by John Zhao, an official with the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) – the company responsible for constructing and currently operating the first phase of the rail line. The announcement was made via a social media post highlighting the Blue Line’s 100% on-time performance record and its contribution to easing traffic congestion while offering a safe and eco-friendly transportation option for Lagos residents.
This news builds upon LAMATA’s earlier announcement in January 2024, which reported that the Blue Line had transported over 583,000 passengers within its first four months of operation (between September 4, 2023, and January 4, 2024). The current ridership figures demonstrate a clear upward trend, signifying the growing popularity of the Blue Line among commuters.
Lagos Blue Line: A Brief Overview
The Lagos Blue Line is a 27-kilometer light rail project that forms a key component of the larger Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) system. The first phase, spanning 13 kilometers between Lagos Marina and Mile 2, was completed in 2023 and officially launched for commercial operations in September of the same year. CCECC is responsible for both the construction and current operation of this initial phase.
The second phase of the Blue Line, currently under construction by CCECC, will extend the rail line from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko, further expanding its reach and ridership potential.
This milestone achievement of surpassing 1 million passengers signifies the growing importance of the Lagos Blue Line as a reliable and sustainable mode of transportation for Lagos residents.
