KEMI BADENOCH EXPLORES INAUGURAL UK INDEPENDENT SCHOOL IN WEST AFRICA – ‘CHARTERHOUSE SCHOO
Tech Economy streche on the visit of Kemi Badenoch, the UK‘s Minister for Business and Trade, today, visited the first British independent school in West Africa, Charterhouse School – building on the UK government’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s desire to offer high quality education at home.
She toured the construction site of the new campus located in Lekki Ajah, Lagos with the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy for Girls Education, Helen Grant.
Recent discussions between the United Kingdom and Nigeria have led to the elimination of constraints on investments in Transnational Education (TNE) in Nigeria, valued at approximately £50 million. This development allows UK Higher Education institutions to establish TNE partnerships with their Nigerian counterparts.
“We anticipate that this significant investment in Nigeria’s education sector will set the stage for additional opportunities.”
The institution aims to provide a robust academic curriculum along with day and boarding facilities, emphasizing both intra and extracurricular activities, including sports, arts, and science.
Commencing in September 2024, the school will welcome primary and secondary school students from Nigeria and beyond.
Kemi Badenoch, the UK Minister for Trade and Business, commented:
“It’s impressive to witness the progress of construction at the Charterhouse site, marking the establishment of the first UK independent school in West Africa. The UK education system is globally recognized, and I trust the school will offer a world-class learning experience to students choosing to study here in Nigeria.”
John Todd, the Head/Director of Education at Charterhouse School, stated:
“We are privileged to host the UK’s Secretary of State for Business and Trade at Charterhouse Lagos, showcasing the exceptional facilities under construction. As Nigeria’s inaugural British independent school, we take pride in our British heritage through the partnership with Charterhouse UK, affirming our dedication to delivering top-notch education in Nigeria. Our gratitude goes to the UK government, facilitated by the British Deputy High Commission in Lagos, for their steadfast support throughout the past year.”
