Patrice Motsepe, the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), stated on Friday in Abidjan that no fewer than two billion people globally are tuning in to watch the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire.
Motsepe shared this information during a news conference ahead of the AFCON final, emphasizing the accomplishment as a source of pride for Africans.
“We have had close to two billion people watching AFCON globally. We should be proud as Africans and the next one will be even better. The success of Africa depends upon Africa working together, trading together, and in football, countries competing and playing together,” he said.
The organization of the tournament has been commendable, featuring six impressive stadiums across five cities hosting the continental showpiece.
The final will see the Super Eagles of Nigeria facing hosts Cote d’Ivoire at the 60,000-capacity Alassane Ouattara Stadium, Ebimpé, on the outskirts of Abidjan.
The third-place match between South Africa and DR Congo is scheduled for Saturday at the iconic Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan.
