HIGHLIGHTS FROM NATIONAL AI STRATEGY WORKSHOP

In an effort to align with President Tinubu’s agenda of accelerating diversification through industrialization, digitization, creative arts, manufacturing, and innovation, the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy organized a workshop to co-create a National Artificial Intelligence Strategy {AI} The strategy aims to leverage a Human-Centered Design (HCD) approach to focus on the needs of both Nigeria and the global community. The four-day stakeholders’ strategy workshop, themed “Developing the High-Level Strategy and Implementation Plan for a National AI Strategy in Nigeria,” brought together key industry players from the private sector, public sector, and global experts. During the workshop, participants discussed the transformative potential of AI in reshaping societies worldwide.

Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, emphasized the collective responsibility of harnessing the power of AI for the betterment of humanity. He urged participants to embrace a future where connectivity and innovation serve as catalysts for national and global development. Dr. Tijani highlighted the profound impact of digital technology on human interactions and societal norms, stressing the need for inclusive participation in shaping AI development. He emphasized the importance of inclusive dialogue and cooperation in shaping a future where AI serves the collective good.

The workshop aimed not only to discuss AI development but also to actively share ideas through cognitive processes. This approach was fundamental as it allowed participants to use their diverse insights and expertise in creating an inclusive strategy that reflects national consensus. The strategy, developed with AI, is envisioned to harness the power of AI to derive value while avoiding errors.

Engr. Faruk Yusuf Yabo, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, stated that AI has the potential to transform Nigeria’s economy across various sectors, from enhancing healthcare to increasing productivity in agriculture and government operations. He emphasized the need to develop a practical and implementable strategy that takes into account Nigeria’s cultural values, traditions, norms, and specific needs.

At the end of the workshop, participants presented various strategic initiatives, roadmap developments, and thematic visioning needed for the development of a robust AI Strategy document. Dr. Tijani thanked all the organizations, both public and private, for their invaluable contributions to the success of the workshop. He expressed confidence that a robust National AI Strategy, beneficial to Nigeria and the world, will be developed.
