GOOGLE PHD FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM 2024 FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS ($30,000 MONETARY AWARD)

Applications are now open for the 2024 Google PhD Fellowship Program. Google PhD Fellowships directly support graduate students as they pursue their PhD, as well as connect them to a Google Research Mentor.

Nurturing and maintaining strong relations with the academic community is a top priority at Google. The Google PhD Fellowship Program was created to recognize outstanding graduate students doing exceptional and innovative research in areas relevant to computer science and related fields. Fellowships support promising PhD candidates of all backgrounds who seek to influence the future of technology. Google’s mission is to foster inclusive research communities and encourage people of diverse backgrounds to apply. The Google PhD Fellowships is currently offer fellowships in Africa, Australia, Canada, East Asia, Europe, India, Latin America, New Zealand, Southeast Asia and the United States.

Research areas of focus

Google PhD Fellowship students are a select group recognized by Google researchers and their institutions as some of the most promising young academics in the world. The Fellowships are awarded to students who represent the future of research in the following fields:

Requirements:

For universities in Africa, Australia/New Zealand, Canada, East Asia, Europe, and the United States:

• Universities must be accredited research institutions awarding research degrees to PhD students in computer science or a related field.
• Students must maintain full-time enrollment in the PhD program throughout the Fellowship period or risk forfeiting the award.
• Google employees, their spouses, children, and household members are ineligible.
• Students already supported by comparable industry awards are ineligible, although government or non-profit funding is exempt.
• Past recipients of the PhD Fellowship program cannot reapply.

For incoming PhD students in Africa, India, Latin America, and Southeast Asia:

• The Fellowship does not guarantee admission to a PhD program. Awardees must separately apply and be accepted to a PhD program in computer science or a related field at an eligible institution.
• Fellowship terms will adhere to the guidelines of the institution where the awardee registers for the PhD program.

Benefits:

• Named Fellowships include a monetary award paid directly to the university to cover student expenses and stipends. A Google Research Mentor will also be assigned.
• Africa: Up to a 3-year Fellowship with a US $12K stipend, covering research-related activities and travel expenses, including overseas travel.

Application procedure:

All application materials must be in English.

For Africa:

Universities are required to submit the following in a single PDF file per student nomination:

• Student CV with website and publication links (if available)
• Short (1-page) resume/CV of the student’s primary PhD program advisor
• Transcripts from the first year/semester of Bachelor’s degree to date
• Research proposal (maximum 3 pages, excluding references)
• 2-3 recommendation letters, with at least one from the thesis advisor for current PhD students
• Student essay response (350-word limit) describing the impact of receiving the Fellowship on education, any relevant circumstances affecting the need for the Fellowship, and the educational goals it will enable.
