GAIN AND NCIC HAVE GRANTED $16,000 TO INNOVATORS IN NIGERIA TO ENCOURAGE THE PROMOTION OF SAFE AND NUTRITIOUS FOODS.

The Nigeria Climate Innovation Centre (NCIC) and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) have awarded $16,000 to four innovators in Nigeria, aiming to promote the consumption of safe and nutritious foods in the country.

Mr. Michael Ojo, GAIN’s Country Director, stated that the initiative seeks to revolutionize the nation’s food systems, marking the successful culmination of the Agribusiness Innovation Challenge.

This challenge, conducted under the Business Support aspect of the Strengthening Nutrition in Priority Staples (SNIPS) project, aimed to boost the production, commercialization, and consumption of safe and nutritious foods in Nigeria.

During the award announcement, Ojo highlighted challenges facing the agricultural sector, which constitutes over a quarter of Nigeria’s GDP, including infrastructure gaps and post-harvest losses.

The Agribusiness Innovation Challenge served as a call for youth-led agri-tech start-ups to utilize creativity in developing digital and hardware supply chain innovations.

Winners of the challenge will receive ongoing support from GAIN to implement their solutions in Kaduna, Nasarawa, Benue, and Oyo states, impacting local communities positively.

The four innovative solutions encompass an automatic and mobile “Cassava Peeling and Washing Machine,” a dual-purpose display chiller and food preservation solution, a platform bridging the gap between farmers and consumers, and a web3 commodity marketplace facilitating market access for traders dealing in nutritious commodities.

GAIN, established in 2002 as a Swiss-based foundation launched at the United Nations, concentrates on addressing human suffering caused by malnutrition.

The Nigeria Climate Innovation Centre (NCIC), supported by the World Bank and the Federal Government, focuses on developing and deploying solutions to climate change challenges in Nigeria by offering venture development, capacity building, market access, and funding to viable green businesses.
