FULLY FUNDED 2024 NORDIC AFRICA INSTITUTE (NAI) SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME

The Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) Scholarship Programme provides opportunities for early career researchers in Africa to enhance their ongoing research at the Institute. This scholarship encompasses access to the Institute’s library, collaboration with its researchers, networking opportunities, and additional resources fostering a vibrant research environment. The initiative by the Nordic Africa Institute aims to bolster knowledge production about Africa, building capacity, and fostering connections between African and Nordic research communities.

The Nordic Africa Institute seeks to contribute to knowledge production about Africa, strengthen capacity, and cultivate relationships between African and Nordic research communities.

Eligibility Criteria for 2024 Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) Scholarship Programme: The program welcomes applications from two primary categories of early career researchers:

  1. Full-time staff employed by an African-based university or research center enrolled in a doctoral program in the African region without access to an international scholarship.
  2. Postdoctoral researchers within 5 years or less of completing their PhD.

Benefits of Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) Scholarship Programme: The scholarship includes a round-trip airfare (economy class), accommodation, a daily subsistence allowance of 400 SEK (approximately 40 USD), an installation grant of 2,500 SEK (approximately 250 USD), and access to a workspace with a desk computer in a shared office at the Institute. The subsistence allowance is provided only for the days spent in Uppsala.

The Institute’s specialized library focuses on contemporary Africa and Social Sciences. Guest Researchers also have access to the Uppsala University Library and the Library of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.

Guest Researchers can present their research at the Nordic Africa Institute and visit other institutions in the Nordic countries.

Required Documents for Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) Scholarship Programme: Applicants should apply online and submit the following documents:

  1. Up-to-date CV, including a list of publications (if available online, include links).
  2. Outline of research project (5 pages):
    • Well-elaborated research proposal.
  3. Work plan (1 page):
    • Specific plan for the time spent at the Institute, including research objectives and expected results.
  4. Reference:
    • A signed letter of support from the applicant’s Head of Department or another senior scholar in the same field, confirming the current workplace/affiliation and field of research.
