FLINDERS UNIVERSITY 2024 MEDICAL SCHOLARSHIP FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS.

Retired ophthalmologists Drs. Mary Calthorpe and George Wong have established an endowed fund to support scholarships for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students studying medicine. The Calthorpe Wong Indigenous Medical Scholarship aims to increase the number of Indigenous students working as doctors in Indigenous communities.

One new scholarship will be available each year, subject to funding.

About the Flinders University 2024 Medical Scholarship:

Flinders University is a public research university located in Adelaide, South Australia, with a presence across 11 locations in South Australia and the Northern Territory. Established in 1966, it was named in honor of British navigator Matthew Flinders, known for exploring and surveying the Australian and South Australian coastline in the early 19th century.

Benefits of the Flinders University 2024 Medical Scholarship:

Successful scholarship recipients will receive an award of $20,000 per academic year for an initial period of up to four years, contingent upon satisfactory academic progress. Payments will be made in fortnightly installments.

Tenure: The scholarship is valid for four years, subject to Satisfactory Academic Progress. An extension of one year may be granted in extenuating circumstances.

Eligibility Criteria:

To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be of Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent;
  • Identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander;
  • Be recognized as such by their community;
  • Be enrolled in the Doctor of Medicine program at Flinders University;
  • Demonstrate financial hardship;
  • Applicants cannot concurrently hold similar scholarships.

Selection Process:

Selection will be conducted by the College of Medicine and Public Health in collaboration with Yunggorendi Student Services and Student Finance and Scholarships.

The scholarship selection will be based on the following criteria:

  • Financial need
  • Demonstrated commitment to working as a doctor in an Indigenous community post-graduation.

Application Process for Flinders University 2024 Medical Scholarship:

Applications must be submitted online via the Flinders University Student System by the specified deadline.

The following documentation is required as part of the application process:

  • For applicants receiving Commonwealth Income Support payments: Recent Centrelink (or DVA) Income Statement showing current receipt of government means-tested benefits.
  • For applicants not receiving Commonwealth Income Support payments: Completion of the Financial Hardship Form available for download.
