FG INTRODUCES PERFORMANCE-BASED WAGE SYSTEM

The Nigerian government is exploring a new wage system that rewards employees based on their productivity, according to the Director-General of the National Productivity Centre (NPC), Dr. Nasir Raji-Mustapha. This proposed “Productivity-led Wage System” would move away from a one-size-fits-all approach, allowing individuals on the same salary scale to earn different wages depending on their output.

Dr. Raji-Mustapha emphasized collaboration. He highlighted discussions with labor unions to ensure their support and input on the proposal. Currently, the first phase of the study is complete. The next step involves engaging stakeholders for feedback before presenting the plan to the federal government for approval.

The NPC is also working with international organizations to enhance worker productivity and skills, ultimately aiming to boost the Nigerian economy. Dr. Raji-Mustapha stressed the importance of productivity for national growth.

Beyond this new initiative, the NPC has a history of promoting productivity. They’ve implemented programs for young people, including members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). The NPC has revived productivity training within NYSC camps and established an “Innovative Productivity Lecture Series” for government ministries and agencies.

The NPC is committed to open communication. Mr. Patrick Abulu, Acting Chairman of the Labour Correspondents Association of Nigeria, encouraged the NPC to continue supporting journalists in reporting the center’s activities.
