Federal Government unveils initiative to train 1,000 Nigerians annually in AI, blockchain
The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched a significant initiative to train 1,000 Nigerians annually in artificial intelligence, blockchain, and other cutting-edge technologies. This initiative is part of Nigeria’s strategy for digital transformation and leadership in Africa.
Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima inaugurated the AI Expertise Blockchain and Technology Training and Outsourcing Initiative on Tuesday in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital.
Building a Global Workforce
Vice President Shettima emphasized Nigeria’s potential to lead in technology:
“We are not merely catching up with the rest of the world; we are poised to overtake them. This initiative offers its beneficiaries the chance to become part of a global workforce, driving innovation that will shape our future.”
He highlighted Jigawa State’s pioneering role in digital technology adoption, referring to the program as a “homecoming ceremony for those who have eased our journey through the Fourth Industrial Revolution.” The VP also outlined the federal government’s vision to create a network of tech hubs nationwide to power Nigeria’s economic growth for decades to come.
Partnership with Gluwa
The initiative is in partnership with Gluwa, a private tech company. Vice President Shettima commended this collaboration, aligning it with President Tinubu’s agenda to revolutionize Nigeria’s digital technology sector. He praised Gluwa’s significant impact, notably empowering Aella Microfinance Bank, which has disbursed over N100 billion to two million Nigerians.
“Our aspiration remains to transform Nigeria into a premier destination for technology outsourcing, creating a model that combines global expertise with local talent,” Shettima stated.
Jigawa State’s Role
Governor Malam Umar Namadi of Jigawa State emphasized the importance of the initiative, calling it a rare opportunity for the youth. He urged the population to explore the digital world of ICT outsourcing, highlighting job creation and economic growth benefits.
Governor Namadi noted Jigawa’s history with ICT education, referencing the state’s reputable Informatics Institute established over two decades ago. He also announced the creation of a new ICT & Digital Economy Agency, reinforcing the state’s commitment to becoming a major ICT hub in Nigeria.

The initiative to train 1,000 Nigerians annually is among several efforts by the government to build capacity in emerging technologies. Earlier this month, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) announced plans to establish research centers for technologies such as AI, IoT, and blockchain across the six geopolitical zones of the country.
NITDA’s Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa, highlighted the agency’s focus on creating a robust technology research ecosystem, with areas of interest including IoT, blockchain technology, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), additive manufacturing, AI, and robotics.
