EXEMPLARY PERFORMANCE BY NIGERIA AT CAIRO BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIP.

The Nigerian contingent at the recently concluded All Africa Senior Badminton Championship in Cairo 2024 secured a total of seven medals (1 gold, 2 silver, and 4 bronze). Anuoluwapo Opeyori, the country’s top badminton player, achieved his fifth African title during the championship.

Anuoluwapo had previously claimed victory in the All-Africa Senior Championships Men’s Singles in Port Harcourt, Nigeria in 2019, the All-Africa Games Men’s Singles in Morocco in 2019, the All Africa Senior Championships Men’s Singles in Uganda 2022, and the All Africa Senior Championships in South Africa 2023 before adding the latest title in Egypt 2024.

In the team event, Nigeria’s male team narrowly lost to Algeria in the finals despite securing the first two of five games, settling for a silver medal. The women’s team earned a valuable bronze after losing in the semifinals to the Ugandan women’s team.

In the individual event, Anuoluwapo Opeyori advanced to the finals by defeating compatriot Victor Ikechukwu 21-13, 19-21, 21-9, setting up a rematch with Mauritian Georges Julien Paul. Opeyori asserted his dominance by defeating Paul 23-21, 11-21, 21-16, securing the coveted Men’s Singles crown for the third consecutive time and marking his fifth African title.
