ELSA/KAS NATIONAL ESSAY WRITING COMPETITION 2024 FOR YOUNG ETHIOPIAN STUDENTS.

The Ethiopian Law Schools Association (ELSA) and Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Office Ethiopia/African Union are pleased to announce a national essay writing competition on the theme “The Role of Academia in Upholding the Rule of Law and Human Rights in Ethiopia.” This competition aims to stimulate critical thinking and academic discourse on academia’s crucial role in advancing the rule of law and protecting human rights in our society.
Eligibility criteria:
This competition seeks to inspire critical thinking and academic dialogue on how academia can reinforce the rule of law and protect human rights in Ethiopia. The competition is open to all enthusiastic Ethiopian undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral students studying law, political science, philosophy, or related social sciences within Ethiopia.
Essay theme:
The essay competition centers on the theme “The Role of Academia in Upholding the Rule of Law and Human Rights in Ethiopia.” Participants can either explore the main theme provided or choose a specific sub-theme within it that they are passionate about and develop a compelling essay.
Essay specifications:
- Maximum word count: 3000 words (excluding references, bibliography, and footnotes).
- Format: Essays must be typed in English, comprising a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 15 pages, excluding footnotes, and submitted as a PDF file. Page size should be standard (8”x11” or A4). Font size must not be smaller than 12, with 1.5 line spacing. Applicants are recommended to use a widely recognized font such as Times New Roman or Calibri.
- Referencing style: Utilize a specific referencing style (e.g., APA, Harvard, OSCOLA, etc.) for accurate citation and to prevent plagiarism.
- Originality: Submissions must be original, innovative, and unpublished works. Plagiarized or previously published works will be disqualified.
- Language: Essays must be written in professional English.
Benefit
Awards: The top three essays will receive the following cash prizes:
- First Place: 30,000 ETB
- Second Place: 25,000 ETB
- Third Place: 20,000 ETB
Certificates of Participation:
All registered students who submit an essay on time will receive a Certificate of Participation.
Workshop and Presentation: The winning essays will be presented at a workshop organized by ELSA and KAS
Office Ethiopia/African Union on 15 May 2024. This workshop will provide authors with the opportunity to showcase their ideas, engage in fruitful discussions, and contribute to the academic and politico-legal community in Ethiopia.
