Applications are now open for the 2025 Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship for Women Journalists.

The Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship offers academic and professional opportunities to enhance the reporting skills of women and nonbinary journalists specializing in human rights and social justice. Established in memory of The Boston Globe correspondent Elizabeth Neuffer, this fellowship honors her legacy and commitment to journalism, particularly in the fields of human rights and social justice.

This fellowship is tailored for women and nonbinary journalists with a minimum of three years of professional experience in print, broadcast, or digital media, whether as staff journalists or freelancers. While it welcomes applicants of all nationalities, non-native English speakers must possess excellent written and verbal English skills to fully engage in and benefit from the program. The fellowship entails research and coursework at MIT’s Center for International Studies, along with journalism internships at The Boston Globe and The New York Times. The program’s flexible structure allows fellows to pursue academic research and refine their reporting skills, with opportunities to publish work under their byline through various media outlets.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Open to women, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming journalists focusing on human rights and social justice.
  • Applicants must have a minimum of three years of full-time, professional journalism experience, excluding internships and university-related work.
  • Journalists from any country worldwide are eligible, with fluency in English necessary for full participation.

Benefits:

  • Fixed monthly stipend to cover living costs.
  • Housing arranged and covered by the IWMF in Cambridge and New York City.
  • Round-trip economy airfare from the fellow’s residence to the United States, including transportation between Fellowship cities.
  • Health insurance during the program.
  • The Fellowship covers the costs of applying for and obtaining a U.S. visa for fellows residing outside the United States.
  • The fellowship does not include a salary, and the fellow is responsible for any additional incidental expenses and other costs.
