About the DAAD Southern Africa Masters & PhD Scholarships:
The programme receives funding from the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and targets university staff primarily, while also considering the public sector’s need for academically trained personnel.
The aim of the DAAD In-Country/In-Region programme is to enhance internationally oriented higher education systems in Sub-Saharan Africa capable of contributing to sustainable development. Scholarships are provided for development-related Master’s or doctoral studies for individuals intending to pursue a career in teaching and/or research at a higher education institution in Sub-Saharan Africa. By training future academic and professional leaders.
The programme aims to achieve the following long-term impacts:
- Qualified professionals’ engagement in addressing development-related challenges in Sub-Saharan Africa
- Graduates strengthening education and research in Sub-Saharan Africa
- Structural enhancement and regional networking of partner institutions and universities To realize these long-term impacts, the following programme objectives have been established: Programme objective 1: Graduates are equipped to assume leadership roles in their respective regions Programme objective 2: Promotion of the participation of women and marginalized groups Programme objective 3: Strengthening organizational, financial, and personal capacities of partner institutions

Eligibility for DAAD Southern Africa Scholarships:
The target group for DAAD In-Country/In-Region scholarships includes graduates and postgraduates from Sub-Saharan Africa with a first academic degree for Master’s programmes or with a Master’s degree for doctoral programmes. They should intend to pursue Master’s or PhD courses in their home country (In-Country scholarships) or in another Sub-Saharan African country (In-Region scholarships). Female applicants and candidates from underprivileged regions or groups are particularly encouraged to apply. Number of Awards: Numerous

Duration of Award: DAAD In-Country/In-Region Funding is provided for the standard duration of a course – typically, up to two years for Masters and up to three years for PhD degree programmes.
