BGI GENOMICS LAUNCHES INAUGURAL AFRICA CERVICAL CANCER SCREENING PROGRAM
Empowering Women’s Health in Africa
BGI Genomics has taken a significant step in advancing women’s health in Africa by launching its first-ever cervical cancer screening program on the continent. This groundbreaking initiative, initiated in Ngoma District, Eastern Province of Rwanda, aims to empower 20,000 women with access to vital Human Papillomavirus (HPV) DNA testing.
A Multi-Faceted Approach to Prevention
The program goes beyond just providing tests. It tackles cervical cancer prevention on multiple fronts:
- Early Detection: By offering HPV DNA testing, known for its high accuracy (up to 95%), the program facilitates early detection of potential cervical cancer risks.
- Enhanced Screening and Awareness: The initiative seeks to improve the overall cervical cancer screening infrastructure in Rwanda, raising awareness and promoting regular checkups among women.
- Building Local Capacity: BGI Genomics provides not only testing equipment but also technology transfer, allowing Rwanda to build its own expertise in precision medical testing. This empowers the country to become self-sufficient in the long run.
A Collaborative Effort for National Impact
The program launch ceremony was a testament to strong partnerships. Key figures in attendance included:

Rwanda Taking Center Stage in Cervical Cancer Elimination
Rwanda is setting a remarkable example by prioritizing cervical cancer prevention. With limited treatment options in many developing countries, early detection becomes even more crucial.
A Focus on Data Privacy and Local Control
The program ensures data privacy and local control. BGI Genomics provides the technology and equipment, but all samples and data are handled by Rwandan personnel and stored locally according to Rwandan laws.
Building a Sustainable Healthcare System
BGI Genomics goes beyond providing a one-time solution. They are committed to assisting Rwanda in establishing a “closed-loop management system” – a comprehensive system encompassing screening, diagnosis, and treatment – for cervical cancer. This will significantly strengthen Rwanda’s healthcare infrastructure for the long term.
Addressing a Critical Public Health Issue
Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among Rwandan women. With only 24% of eligible women having undergone screening in the past five years, the need for this program is undeniable.
A Self-Empowering Approach
The program incorporates a self-sampling model, where women can collect their own test samples. This approach empowers women and increases accessibility, potentially reaching a wider population for screening.
