Carman International Fellowship Overview

Serving and Learning in the Field

Each year, Mosaic International selects a fellow to work directly with our partner program in Tanzania, Building a Caring Community (BCC), which is an outreach ministry of the Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT).

New applications are released each January and are due May 1. New fellows are selected and announced in late June or early July with a fellowship orientation in Omaha, Nebraska in September.  Fellows begin their 13-month placement in January.

Past fellows have included individuals from the U.S., Canada and Europe, as well as local candidates from the country where the fellowship is served.

Fellowship Sponsor: Mosaic

Mosaic, a comprehensive healthcare organization, has been dedicated to serving diverse needs for over a century. Operating across 13 states, the Mosaic network supports over 4,900 individuals in the USA. In 1994, our international ministry began when faith leaders in Latvia approached us to support a startup working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Over the past 29 years, we’ve collaborated with organizations in Latvia, Romania, and Tanzania.

Tanzania Program Overview

Building a Caring Community, a Mosaic-supported program in Moshi, Tanzania, serves 220 children and young adults with intellectual disabilities—a significantly underserved population in Sub-Saharan Africa. Participants receive support through 11 day centers in Moshi or home visits by outreach workers from BCC.

The Carman International Fellowship includes an economic development/poverty reduction component with social businesses and a microcredit loan program. Additionally, it involves a global health aspect through PROMOT Health, a comprehensive healthcare program. The BCC program also encompasses an inclusive primary education initiative and vocational training for young adults.
