AFRICAN HUMANTIES PROGRAM

The African Humanities Program (AHP) by Carnegie/ACLS was initiated in 2008 with the generous support of the Carnegie Corporation of New York to fund early-career scholars working and residing in Africa. ACLS crafted the program to stimulate and facilitate the generation of new knowledge and novel research approaches, bolster the capacity of early-career researchers in African universities, and promote the humanities by establishing networks for scholarly communication across Africa and with global Africanists.

Between 2009 and 2022, the African Humanities Program granted fellowships to over 500 early-career scholars in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. The Carnegie Corporation of New York generously supported this initiative. The final competition occurred in 2021-22, and the last cohort of Fellows is expected to conclude their tenures in 2023. The impetus generated by AHP will persist through its successor organization, the African Humanities Association (AHA), a new scholarly association established by AHP Fellows, assessors, and advisers.

The African Humanities Association (AHA) was officially formed through the adoption of its constitution at an AHP Regional Assembly in Abuja in February 2020. AHA envisions a future in Africa where confident, self-referencing communities of Humanities, Social Science, and Arts scholars garner respect from peers in other disciplines and broader society due to their engagement with the diverse challenges confronting the continent. ACLS anticipates continued collaboration with AHA to support scholar development and capacity building on the continent in the years to come.
