HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TAKES ACTION TO CURB CYBERBULLYING

Tajudeen Abbas, the Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, has declared the intention to enhance legislation addressing defamation, character assassination, and cyberbullying.

In a press conference at the National Assembly in Abuja on Thursday, Abbas clarified that the purpose of the legislation is not to suppress free speech but to safeguard the dignity of individuals and institutions from cyberattacks.

He urged Nigerians to be cautious of slander against government officials, emphasizing the recent surge in malicious campaigns targeting top government figures. As the nation navigates through challenging times, Abbas stressed the importance of unity and constructive engagement, highlighting the paramount synergy needed among the three arms of government – executive, legislative, and judiciary.

Addressing citizens, Abbas called for positive and constructive criticism, welcoming engagement on crucial national issues. While endorsing freedom of expression and constructive dialogue, he cautioned against the dangers of fake news, slander, and defamation, especially targeting the president and senior government officials.

Abbas observed an increase in defamation campaigns on social media, involving the deliberate spread of false information to harm the reputation of individuals or organizations. These campaigns often target political opponents, seeking to undermine their credibility, integrity, and public trust.

Highlighting the recent case of “unjustified and baseless allegations” against the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, Abbas warned of the dangers posed by an unregulated and unaccountable social media.

Abbas cited his predecessor and current Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, as one of many victims of cyberbullying, defamation, and character assassination. He emphasized that cyberbullying is punishable under Section 375 of the Criminal Code Act and Section 24 of the Cybercrime Prohibition and Prevention Act (2015).

Expressing concern over the erosion of democracy and national unity due to such acts, Abbas called on security agencies to diligently investigate matters raised in Gbajabiamila’s letter. He urged agencies to bring those responsible for character assassination before the law if found guilty.
