NCC SUCCESSFULLY MEDIATES LENGTHY 15-YEAR INTERCONNECTION DISPUTE BETWEEN MTN AND GLOBACOM

After a service disruption lasting five days, affecting approximately 46.6 million subscribers across both telecommunication networks, reports indicate that Globacom made a payment of ₦2.6 billion to MTN Nigeria in 2019 to settle interconnection debts.

The telecommunications regulatory body stressed the critical importance of Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and other licensees strictly adhering to the terms and conditions outlined in their licenses, especially those specified in interconnection agreements. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) underlined the necessity for compliance within the telecommunications industry.

Furthermore, the commission announced its intention to request relevant documentation and regular updates from MNOs. It aims to adopt an open and proactive approach to address any future instances of interconnect indebtedness within the industry.

It is worth recalling that in January 2024, the NCC issued a notice revealing partial approval for Globacom to disengage from its association with MTN Nigeria.

Moreover, the regulatory body has stated its intention to request relevant documents and receive regular updates from Mobile Network Operators (MNOs). It plans to adopt a transparent approach in resolving any potential future cases of interconnect indebtedness within the telecommunications industry.

It is noteworthy to remember that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) revealed, through a notice in January 2024, that it had given partial approval for Globacom to undergo a separation from MTN Nigeria.
