Overview:

We are looking for a motivated student and postdoc who can start in Spring or Fall annually. The prospective Ph.D. student or postdoc will work on the materials science for Li/Na/Zn-ion batteries. ‍

Background:

Achieving a zero-carbon transition will require meeting global energy demands with renewable sources of energy. Due to the intermittent nature of many renewable sources, achieving significant levels of integration will demand utility-scale energy storage systems. Li-ion batteries have dominated the market. However, rapidly growing demands in many technology sectors (e.g. electric vehicles, mobile electronics) necessitates the development of sustainable battery technology to avoid potential resource crises (e.g. lithium, cobalt, nickel) in the future. In addition, advanced performance including high energy density, low cost, long lifetime, fast-charging and better safety, are also significant.

Job Description:

Ph.D. student and postdoc will design and synthesize novel electrode/electrolyte materials, explore the insights into fundamental reaction mechanism and kinetics, investigate thermodynamics-electrode/electrolyte interfacial structure-property correlations, and develop functional electrochemical devices (mainly Li/Na/Zn-ion batteries). Detailed project descriptions and planning will be undertaken directly with the successful candidate. The student will develop exceptional skills and expertise in the areas of electrochemical engineering and materials science during his/her studies.

How to apply:

In the first instance, informal enquiries (accompanied with a CV and transcript) should be directed to Prof. Lin Ma, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, USA.

Email:  (Please put “Prospective Ph.D. Student” in the e-mail title)
