350 FREED FROM SAMBISA FOREST: MILITARY HANDS OVER TO BORNO FOR REHABILITATION
Military Rescue:
- The Nigerian military’s Joint Task Force Northeast Operation Hadin Kai conducted a 10-day clearance operation in the Sambisa Forest.
- During the operation, they rescued 350 people, including six adult males, 134 females, and 209 children.
- Deputy Theatre Commander, Maj.-Gen. Kenneth Chigbu, emphasized the professionalism of the joint task force in this operation.
Rescuees’ Condition:
- Chigbu indicated that the rescued individuals were likely held against their will in the forest.
- The military provided initial support, including food and medical evaluations.
- Efforts were underway to offer them decent clothing.
Rehabilitation Process:
- The Borno State Government, represented by the Director of Social Welfare, Asabe Mohammed, received the rescued individuals.
- They will be transferred to a rehabilitation center for a comprehensive reintegration program.
Rehabilitation Program Details:
- The program will involve:
- Documentation of each individual.
- Mental health and psychosocial support services.
- Skills training based on their preferences, with 10 different options available.
- Provision of tools upon completion of training.
- Assistance with reintegration back into their communities and families.
Collaboration:
- Chigbu expressed appreciation for the support of the Borno Government, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and other international and local organizations.
