OLUSEGUN OBASANJO PRIZE FOR SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERY AND TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION 2024

INTRODUCTION

The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) is pleased to announce the 2024 Olusegun Obasanjo Prize for Scientific Discovery and/or Technological Innovation. This prestigious prize aims to reward and honor African scientists who have made outstanding contributions in scientific discovery or technological innovation.

OBJECTIVES

The prize seeks to:

  • Promote and foster the growth of a vibrant African scientific community.
  • Stimulate and nurture the spirit of scientific discovery and technological innovation for socio-economic development in Africa.

PRIZE DETAILS

  • Frequency: Awarded once every two years.
  • Themes: The Chief Obasanjo Prize will be awarded in the following fields:
    • Biotechnology
    • Energy
    • Information and communication technologies
    • Material sciences

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • Active involvement in the scientific or technological area in which the nominee has made noticeable contributions.
  • The nominee’s works should be either already patented or have the potential to lead to a patent.
  • The nominee’s work should have a multiplier effect.
  • Open to all African scientists and technologists without gender, ethnic, or geographical differences.
  • National scientists and fellows employed by or serving as senior advisors to the AAS are not eligible.
  • Current members of the governing organs of the AAS are also not eligible.

FUNDING INFORMATION

The Prize, awarded every two years, includes:

  • Cash Award: US$5,000 (this amount may be reviewed and adjusted by the Governing Council (GC) of the AAS).
  • Inscribed Gold Medal
  • Citation: A certificate.
  • Election into AAS Fellowship
  • The prize may be awarded to an individual or jointly to two or more persons who will share the cash award equally.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

  1. Candidates should complete the online application.
  2. The nomination should be evaluated on the nominee’s merit and achievements.
  3. The nominee’s work should have a significant positive impact on sustainable development, including the management of natural resources and environmental protection with national or regional significance.

The responsibility for selecting the laureate of the Olusegun Obasanjo Prize lies with the International Prize Committee, which ensures that the recipient(s) meet the highest standards of scientific or technological breakthroughs.
