SABOTAGE LEAVES GOMBE, YOLA, JALINGO WITHOUT POWER

A late-night statement from Nigeria’s power transmission company, TCN, confirmed a troubling development. Vandals targeted four towers on a crucial power line (Jos-Gombe) around 3:32 pm on Monday. This act of destruction caused widespread blackouts across three states: Adamawa, Gombe, and Taraba.

The attack on the power line had a domino effect. The vital stations in Gombe, Yola, and Jalingo couldn’t receive their usual electricity supply. This in turn disrupted power for many residents within the areas served by the Yola and Jos electricity companies.

While trying to fix the power outage, TCN’s engineers made a shocking discovery. Four towers (288, 289, 290, and 291) on the line were vandalized, with some parts even stolen! This damage caused the towers to collapse entirely.

The vandalism caused major problems. Power stations in Gombe, Yola, and Jalingo couldn’t receive electricity, which then cut power for many people in areas served by Yola and Jos electricity companies.

To get some power back on quickly, TCN is trying a temporary solution. They’ll send electricity to Gombe through a different, lower-capacity power line from Bauchi, hoping to eventually reach other affected areas.

TCN vowed to do everything they can to get power back up in the affected areas. They’re also working on rebuilding the four destroyed towers. This isn’t the first time vandalism has caused blackouts – Abuja faced a similar situation in February due to damaged TCN towers.
