Calling Tanzanian women in conservation: gain tech skills to tackle challenges and join a supportive network. Apply by April 19th for a 6-month program with workshops and virtual training.

Eligibility Requirements

• Applications are now open for ‘Women in Conservation Technology’, a six-month training programme for early career Tanzanian women.
• Selected participants will explore technological solutions to regional conservation challenges.

This year, the Women in Conservation Technology programme is run in partnership by the Grumeti Fund’s Research and Innovation for the Serengeti Ecosystem (RISE), the WILDLABS Conservation Technology Community, and the international wildlife NGO, Fauna & Flora.

The 2024 Women in Conservation Technology Programme is Now Open!

Are you a passionate Tanzanian woman working in conservation, eager to harness the power of technology to address pressing wildlife challenges? This program is designed for you!

Who Can Apply?

• Early-career women in the conservation field (less than 3 years of professional experience)
• Tanzanian nationals who identify as women
• Minimum of 18 years old
• Hold a Diploma or B.Sc. in Wildlife Conservation, Forestry, Environmental Science, Zoology, or a related field
• Possess a strong passion for conservation and a curiosity about technology
• We highly encourage applicants with an interest in securing roles like research assistants, field program staff, or pursuing further study in conservation science.
• Individuals currently employed in a conservation organization are welcome to apply with supervisor support.
• Commitment to attending both in-person workshops and participating in virtual components is essential.

Program Structure:

The program offers a comprehensive learning experience, combining in-person workshops with ongoing virtual training and support.

• Two In-Person Workshops: Held at the RISE field institute in the Serengeti, these workshops provide hands-on training with the latest hardware and software tools used in wildlife monitoring, protection, and human-wildlife mitigation. Led by experienced field experts, the workshops also incorporate leadership training and networking sessions. Connect with established female leaders in the East African conservation technology sector and build valuable connections!
• Virtual Skills Building and Professional Development: During the five-month period between workshops, participants will engage in online training modules designed to enhance their skills and knowledge base.

Beyond the Program:

Following completion, participants will benefit from continued engagement opportunities:

• Connect with your cohort: Build lasting relationships with other program participants and forge a supportive network.
• Join the alumni community: Gain access to the Women in Conservation Technology alumni network, a valuable source of ongoing support and professional connections.
• Expand your professional network: Connect with a wider network of women and conservation professionals across East Africa.

Workshop Details:

• First Workshop: June 3-7, 2024 (arrival June 2nd, departure June 8th)

Benefits:

• Up to ten participants will receive funding to cover in-country travel and accommodation during the in-person workshops.
• Limited childcare support may be available during workshop sessions.

Important Notes:

• Full program attendance is mandatory (workshop 1: June 2-8; workshop 2: December 3-7).
• A letter of support from your current supervisor is required, acknowledging permission to attend both in-person and virtual training sessions.
• A certificate will be awarded upon successful program completion.

How to apply

Applicants must apply using this Google form and attach the following supplementary materials:

1. WILDLABS account username. If you don’t have an account yet, take the time to create one here https://wildlabs.net/user/register 

2. Scanned copy of Diploma/B.Sc./M.Sc. certificates.

3. Copy of National Identification Card, Passport or valid Driver’s License.

4. CV/Resume (max 2 pages).

5. One letter of reference from a lecturer, employer, or mentor that can speak to your career aspirations and interests.

Guidance for reference letters – Referrers should clarify their relationship with the applicant in their letter and comment upon the applicant’s suitability for this position and how it would benefit their career goals. Please address the letter to RISE at Grumeti Fund. 

6. Signed permission from your current supervisor explicitly acknowledging permission to attend both in-person workshops (June 2-8 2024; Dec 3-7 2024) and to participate in virtual programming. Letters that do not include acknowledgement of specific dates will not be accepted.
