Applications are now open for the  Grist climate fiction writing story contest. Grist is excited to open submissions for the fourth year of our Imagine 2200: Climate Fiction for Future Ancestors short story contest. Imagine 2200 is an invitation to writers from all over the globe to imagine a future in which solutions to the climate crisis flourish and help bring about radical improvements to our world.

Craft a narrative that paints a picture of the world you envision for 2200, where equitable climate progress reigns supreme. Dive into the depths of your imagination, weaving together tales of abundance, adaptation, reform, and hope. Let your creativity soar as you depict futures where communities thrive amidst climate challenges and solutions take root.

In a document ranging from 2,500 to 5,000 words, bring your dream world to life. Show us the richness of your storytelling, with gripping plots, vibrant characters, and immersive settings that capture the essence of your envisioned future.

For your chance to win the grand prize of $3,000, ensure your submission adheres to the following guidelines:

– Submit your short story as a Word document (.doc accepted; .docx preferred).
– Name your document with the title of your story followed by the year, for example: “Story Title – 2024.”
– Remove any identifying biographical information from your document, including your name.
– On the first page, include your story’s title and word count at the top using Arial 14-point font.
– Throughout the document, maintain Arial 12-point font with double line spacing and at least one-inch margins.
– Include a header in the upper right-hand corner of each page with the sequential page number starting from page 1, along with your story’s title.
