DAAD LEADERSHIP FOR AFRICA MASTER’S SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME 2024/2025 FOR EAST AFRICANS (FULLY FUNDED STUDY IN GERMANY)

Applications are now open for the DAAD Leadership for Africa Master’s Scholarship Programme. The scholarship programme “Leadership for Africa” (LfA) aims to support the academic qualification and advancement of young refugees and national scholars from Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, and Uganda at higher education institutions in Germany.
The objectives of the DAAD Leadership for Africa Master’s Scholarship Programme aim to foster the academic growth and progression of young refugees and national scholars from Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, and Uganda at German higher education institutions. In the midst of conflicts and displacement in various African nations, this initiative seeks to contribute to the education of future leaders crucial for the ongoing development of their respective home countries. The Leadership for Africa program provides scholarships for Master’s studies in Germany across all fields of study except medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, law, fine arts, and architecture. Additionally, all scholarship recipients are enrolled in a supplementary training program focused on good governance, civil society, and career development. Completion of this mandatory program is required in addition to regular academic studies.
Eligibility Requirements:
The program targets two groups:
1) Highly qualified refugees who possess refugee status and meet the necessary qualifications for Master’s studies in Germany.
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
Hold refugee status in their host countries, granted before April 2nd, 2023.
Country of asylum must be either Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, or Uganda.
Completed Bachelor’s degree at the time of application.
2) Highly qualified graduates from Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, or Uganda who meet the necessary qualifications for Master’s studies in Germany.
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
Citizenship of either Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, or Uganda.
Reside in Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, or Uganda.
Completed Bachelor’s degree at the time of application.
Please note:
With a degree in Medicine, applicants can apply for Public Health or Biomedical Master-related programs only. A Master’s program in Medicine is not eligible for funding.
For applicants from artistic disciplines and the field of architecture, the DAAD offers subject-specific scholarship programs (refer to separate DAAD scholarship offers in the scholarship database).
Funding:
The scholarship includes:
German language course (up to 6 months) in Germany before the start of university studies.
Tuition-free M.A. or M.Sc. degree program at a public or state-recognized university in Germany starting in the winter term of 2025 (September/October 2025).
Additional mandatory training program LEAD!
Value:
German language course (up to 6 months) in Germany before the start of the study program, covering test fees for a German language certificate (TestDaF or DSH test), pocket money, and accommodation (only during the language course). The DAAD decides on funding participation and duration based on German language skills and study requirements. Participation in a language course is compulsory.
Monthly scholarship rate payments of 934 EURO.
Adequate health, accident, and private/personal liability insurance in Germany.
Travel allowance.
Yearly study allowance.
Additional mandatory training program LEAD!
If applicable, monthly rent subsidy and monthly allowance for accompanying family members (spouse and/or children).
Please note that family reunions may be delayed or even impossible during the scholarship duration due to visa processing times for some home or host countries.
