THE AFRICA INSTITUTE GLOBAL AFRICA TRANSLATION FELLOWSHIP 2025 FOR SCHOLARS ($5,000 GRANT)

Applications are currently open for the 2025 Africa Institute Global Africa Translation Fellowship. The Africa Institute is inviting applications for the fourth cohort of the Global Africa Translation Fellowship for the year 2024, as part of its African Languages and Translation Program.

The fellowship is open to applicants from the Global South and offers a grant of up to $5,000 for the translation of works from the African continent and its diaspora into English or Arabic (other languages will also be considered). This fellowship is non-residential, allowing the recipient scholar to complete the translation work outside of The Africa Institute in Sharjah, UAE. Its goal is to make important texts in African and African Diaspora studies accessible to a broader readership worldwide.

Funding for the fellowship ranges from $1,000 to $5,000, depending on the quality and scope of the project. Projects may include retranslations of classic texts, previously untranslated works, poetry, prose, or collections of critical theory. The project may already be in progress or a new project feasible for completion within the grant period.

Application Procedure:

Applicants must submit:

– A two-page CV/resume detailing institutional affiliation, educational qualifications (including the highest degree received), and key publications/works.
– A two-page narrative outlining the proposed translation project, its significance, justification for re-translation (if applicable), and proposed completion dates. The project may be ongoing or a new endeavor fitting within the grant period.
– A 4–5-page (double-spaced) sample of both the original text(s) and the translation.
– Information on the copyright status of the work: If not in the public domain, include the copyright notice from the original text and a letter from the copyright holder affirming the availability of English language rights.
All application components should be merged into a single PDF file in the order of statement, sample, copyright status (if relevant), and CV.

Name the file with the applicant’s name in this format: LASTNAME-FIRSTNAME.pdf. Use the same name in the email subject heading LASTNAME-FIRSTNAME application and send PDF as an email attachment to applications@theafricainstitute.org.
