About the scholarships for masters in human rights and democratization in Africa at the University of Pretoria: The LLM/MPhil in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa (HRDA) is an esteemed one-year intensive course where approximately 25-30 outstanding individuals spend six months in Pretoria and six months at one of the 12 partner universities across Africa. They receive instruction from distinguished lecturers in the human rights field and engage in various practical training exercises. This program is unique in Africa. Graduates become members of the HRDA Alumni Association, comprising 537 active members involved in various human rights endeavors, from grassroots initiatives to international organizations such as the African Union and the United Nations. Individuals from all African countries are encouraged to apply for admission to pursue a Master’s degree (LLM/MPhil) in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa at the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, South Africa.
The LLM/MPhil in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa is open to 25 to 30 individuals from African countries with the following qualifications and preferably experience in the human rights field:
Law students (LLM option): A degree qualifying for entry into the legal profession (e.g., LLB or equivalent) Non-law students (MPhil option): At least an Honours degree in a field relevant to human rights and democratisation During the intensive one-year program, students learn from esteemed human rights lecturers and gain valuable practical exposure. This program is unparalleled in Africa.

Who Can Apply: Eligibility criteria for the LLM/MPhil (HRDA) are as follows:

Women, as well as individuals from minority groups such as indigenous peoples, LGBTI individuals, and persons with disabilities, are particularly encouraged to apply.

Value of program: Scholarships of up to US$15,000, funded by the European Union, are available.
