ILO ACCEL AFRICA REGIONAL MEDIA “VOICES AGAINST CHILD LABOUR” COMPETITION 2024 FOR MEDIA PROFESSIONALS AND STUDENTS.

Applications are currently open for the ILO Voices against Child Labour: A Media Competition. This competition serves as a call to action for media professionals and students to contribute their voices and skills to combat child labour, aiming to:
OBJECTIVES:
Raise Awareness and Advocacy: Increase public understanding of child labour complexities in Africa. Engage and Empower: Encourage local communities, activists, and media personnel to combat child labour. Showcase Best Practices: Highlight effective strategies to combat child labour across Africa. Encourage Positive Change: Inspire action and advocacy at grassroots and policy levels through storytelling.

- Realities of Child Labour in Africa
- Technology Innovations in Eradicating Child Labour
- Gender Perspectives in Child Labour
- Community-led Solutions to Child Labour
- Role of Supply Chain Actors in Combating Child Labour (Focus on Cocoa, Coffee, Cotton, Tea, and Gold Mining Supply Chains)
ELIGIBILITY:
Journalists, filmmakers, photographers, and media professionals from specified African countries or African-focused international outlets. Students from specified countries enrolled in any African university. Participants must be above 18 years old. Each participant can submit entries in a maximum of two categories: video, written media, or photo stories.
AWARDS:
Grand Prize: One journalist will attend and report on the ILO’s “Knowledge Sharing Forum” in Nairobi, Kenya, in May 2024, with all travel expenses covered. Top Journalists: Up to 10 participants will attend a knowledge-sharing event in Kampala, Uganda, in October 2024, fully sponsored by the ILO.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
Submit via email or WeTransfer to accel-africa-media@ilo.org. Subject line format: APPLICANT NAME_PROFESSIONAL/STUDENT_VIDEO/WRITTEN/PHOTOGRAPHY. Content should include WeTransfer submission, consent forms, and CV. Written submissions should not exceed 800 words, and videos should not exceed 7 minutes. Entries must focus on specified thematic areas related to child labour in Africa. Entries must be original and recently developed (from June 2023), with consent for republication if previously published. Entries can be in English, French, or local languages with translations/subtitles in English or French. Submissions must adhere to journalistic standards, respecting individuals’ rights, particularly children’s rights, portrayed in the stories.

Submissions containing harmful, misleading, defamatory, or inappropriate content, or promoting illegal activities, will be disqualified.
