AFRICA EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP FUNDING 2025 FOR UNDERGRADUATES’ WOMEN: ZAWADI
The Zawadi Africa Education Fund is a program aimed at providing undergraduate scholarships to academically talented girls/women from disadvantaged backgrounds across Africa to pursue higher education in the US and other parts of Africa.

About the award:
The Zawadi Africa Education Fund is a leadership development initiative offering university scholarships, leadership development, and life skills training to financially disadvantaged African girls with outstanding academic potential. The goal is to nurture a generation of young African women leaders.
Eligibility: To be eligible for this scholarship, candidates must:
- Be a girl who has completed her secondary school education (e.g., the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education – KCSE).
- Demonstrate academic excellence (A Plain or A Minus).
- Exhibit leadership qualities, such as serving as a prefect in school, involvement in community or church leadership, or leadership in peer-related activities.
- Have overcome significant challenges such as financial difficulties, oppressive social-cultural practices like early marriages and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), to achieve academic excellence.
- Come from a financially disadvantaged background.
- Demonstrate clear financial need.
Selection criteria:
Criteria for selection include academic achievement, extracurricular involvement, leadership potential, and financial need.
Selection process: Admission decisions are solely at the discretion of the Universities’ Admission Boards. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview approximately one month after the application deadline.
How to apply: Applications for this year are now open. The deadline for Kenya is April 5th, 2024.
If you meet the eligibility criteria:
- Ensure that you download and complete all sections of the application form. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
- Provide a typed one-page biography and a passport photo highlighting your family and educational background, aspirations, financial status, and school/community activities.
- Submit a 500-650 word essay on ONE of three topics listed in the application.
- Include copies of your high school leaving certificate and KCSE result slip, as well as certificates demonstrating involvement in extracurricular activities and leadership initiatives.
- Obtain a signed recommendation letter from your class teacher or head teacher.
- Attach a copy of your birth certificate and National Identity Card (if applicable).
- Submit a letter from your local chief confirming knowledge of your family and yourself, preferably on government letterhead.
- Any falsification of information or submission of forged documents will result in disqualification.
- Submit a hard copy of the application form and supporting documents by the deadline (5th April 2024) to the designated offices indicated in the application forms.
